A little more about me

I am interested in brains, machines, and how people come to understand things. Those interests have led me into research, code, teaching, and community building. They also account for a fair number of the tabs I leave open.

I tend to follow a question before I know what form the answer might take. Sometimes the useful next step is an experiment. Sometimes it is a piece of software, an essay, or a conversation with people who have been thinking about the same thing from another direction.

Intelligence is one of the questions I return to most often. I want to understand how biological and artificial systems make sense of the world, what we can learn by studying their behaviour, and where our explanations stop being convincing. I like taking an assumption apart and finding out how much of it still holds.

That interest has a practical side. I work with EEG and signal processing, but I also care about who gets to encounter the science in the first place. Through my Rural STEM Initiative, I have taught EEG, ECG, and EMG across 34 rural government schools. Science communication and community building sit alongside the technical work for me.

I like making an idea available to someone else. Running an experiment gives a question something we can examine. Building a prototype lets someone try a possibility. Starting a community gives people somewhere to find each other. A website lets a thought leave the notebook.

The rest of my interests are less easy to arrange. I like unusual films, books that send me off in another direction, design that someone has clearly thought about, and people who care deeply about what they are doing. These things find their way into the work, even when the connection takes a while to become clear.

I do not have a settled description of what all of this will become. For now, I want to keep learning, make useful things, and remain willing to change my mind. This site is a record of where that has taken me so far.
